Neither cartridge is designed to reduce chlorine, taste, odor, or dissolved contaminants. Those needs call for a properly matched carbon filter or other treatment media.

The main difference is construction. A melt blown cartridge is made from layers of polypropylene fibers that form a deep, dense filter wall. Water travels through those layers, and particles are trapped throughout the cartridge's depth. This is often called depth filtration.

Many pleated filters can also be rinsed and reused for a limited period, depending on the specific media, construction, and what the cartridge has captured. This can be helpful for water with coarse, easily removed sediment. It does not mean every pleated cartridge should be cleaned indefinitely. Media can wear, pleats can remain embedded with fine material, and cleaning does not restore a filter to new condition.

A washable pleated cartridge is most useful when you are willing to inspect and maintain it.
